Curtains close on cultural life in virus-hit New York

NEW YORK: Broadway suspended performances for a month Thursday as the world’s most famous theater district was hit by a ban on large public gatherings imposed on New Yorkers to stem the new coronavirus outbreak.
Broadway had been one of the few entertainment institutions still standing in the now-stalling cultural engine of New York, where a number of top concert halls shut along with the prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Performances closed after 5:00 pm (2100 GMT) Thursday and will not start up again until April 13, announced the Broadway League, a trade association.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo earlier told reporters only schools, hospitals, nursing homes and mass transit facilities would be allowed gatherings of more than 500 people from Friday because of the pandemic, which has so far infected more than 1,300 in the United States.
The capacity for seated venues in New York is to be reduced by 50 percent, even if the occupancy is normally 500 or less.
Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a state of emergency in the city, saying it could have 1,000 COVID-19 cases by next week, a significant spike from the current tally of 95.
New York postponed its upcoming Tribeca Film Festival as well as the annual St Patrick’s Day parade, the largest in the US that attracts two million spectators.
The Broadway closure is a major blow for a tourism income stream that brought in more than $26.7 million last week alone.
“Our top priority has been and will continue to be the health and well-being of Broadway theatre goers and the thousands of people who work in the theater industry every day, including actors, musicians, stage hands, ushers, and many other dedicated professionals,” Charlotte St Martin, president of the Broadway League, said in a statement.
The shutdown will be even longer than a landmark pause in 2007, when a stage hand strike dropped curtains for 19 days.
Jessica Hughes, a tourist from Minnesota, found the move “a little bit extreme.”
“I hope all of the staff and cast and crew are all paid during this time that they’re forced to be off,” the 40-year-old told AFP.

The Met said it would close from March 13 without giving a reopening date, while the Metropolitan Opera, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and the New York Philharmonic canceled programming through March 31.
“With health authorities urging social distancing with greater emphasis, it is simply untenable for us to continue to perform, as it puts our artists, staff, and audiences at risk,” the Met Opera’s general manager Peter Gelb said in a statement.
The Met art museum said it would close all three of its institutions — the flagship location on Fifth Avenue, the Met Breuer and the Met Cloisters — and would “undertake a thorough cleaning” of each.
“While we don’t have any confirmed cases connected to the museum, we believe that we must do all that we can to ensure a safe and healthy environment for our community,” said the museum’s president and CEO Daniel Weiss.
The Met museum drew more than seven million visitors in 2019, with nearly a third coming from abroad.
The Brooklyn Museum followed suit in closing, and Washington’s Kennedy Center and the Boston Symphony Orchestra also said they would be closing their doors until the end of March.

The latest string of cancellations and closures comes as the entertainment industry grapples with the shutdown of Austin’s South by Southwest and Miami’s Ultra festivals, along with the postponement of California’s premier desert music fest Coachella.
Industry tracker Billboard also reported Thursday that the globe’s largest concert and ticketing firm Live Nation was suspending all tours.
The measure would spell disaster for many artists and their crews who rely on live performances for much of their income, as streaming eats into album sales.
Live Nation — whose stock plummeted 16.6 percent Wednesday — said its staff was prepared to weather the closure, according to Billboard, and would reevaluate the situation in early April.
Tours affected include Billie Eilish, Cher, Kiss, Post Malone and Tool.
Eilish on Thursday postponed her North American dates, saying in a statement “please keep yourselves healthy. I love you.”
But smaller venues and creatives stand to take the worst hit.
House of Yes, a performance venue in Brooklyn, announced that its weekend events would operate at half capacity per the governor’s directive, and then it would close until further notice.
“We also hope the government will enact supportive measures for small businesses, artists, live performers, and freelancers that will cushion the very deep blow to our core community,” the club said in a statement.

PARIS: Paris’ famed Moulin Rouge cabaret, the Louvre museum and the Eiffel Tower were among top tourism landmarks that closed their doors on Friday after the government banned gatherings of more than 100 people to curb the spread of coronavirus.
The cabaret, known for its high-kicking dancers, and many other venues including cinemas were caught on the hop by the televised lunchtime announcement by Prime Minister Edouard Philippe in response to the coronavirus outbreak.
The Louvre museum, home to Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo sculpture and one of France’s biggest tourist attractions, said it would close its doors from 1800 (1700 GMT) until further notice.
The Eiffel Tower will close from 2100 (2000 GMT). Its management said the tower would reopen as soon as health conditions allowed.
But some venues were still unsure on Friday afternoon whether or not they would be taking in spectators, including one cinema in central Paris which said it was keeping its doors open for now as it expected fewer than 100 people.
Before the prime minister’s announcement, gatherings of anywhere below 1,000 people were permitted. But France is stepping up its effort to contain the virus. It is also shutting schools from Monday.
The 130-year-old Moulin Rouge – whose can-can shows featuring dancers in dazzling ostrich feather and rhinestone costumes attract scores of visitors – confirmed it would be closed to the public until further notice.
It was offering refunds, or the option of rebooking tickets for another date, a spokeswoman said.
In the meantime, however, the venue in Paris’s Pigalle neighborhood, surmounted by a giant red wind mill which has become an attraction in itself, will remain lit up, the spokeswoman added.
“We don’t want the Moulin Rouge to lose all positivity and optimism, we want people to still be able to take photos,” she said.
Some of the Moulin Rouge’s 450 employees will keep working, repairing costumes, for instance, to be ready to reopen, the spokeswoman said.
La Gaiete Lyrique, a rock concert venue with a capacity of 700 people, said it would be closed until April 6, with many other show halls following suit.
The Odeon-Theatre de L’Europe venue, which was due to stage Tennessee Williams’s The Glass Menagerie with French acting star Isabelle Huppert in the lead role on Friday, also confirmed that performances were canceled.
France had reported 2,876 cases of coronavirus and 61 deaths as of Thursday.

Weinstein sentenced to 23 years prison, taken to NY hospital for chest pains

NEW YORK: Former movie producer Harvey Weinstein was sentenced on Wednesday to 23 years in prison for sexual assault and rape after giving a rambling court statement sympathizing with men accused of sexual misconduct during the #MeToo era.
The sentence was handed down in Manhattan criminal court by Justice James Burke, with Weinstein’s lawyer Donna Rotunno afterward denouncing the prison term as “obscene” and “cowardly” and saying the judge and jury “caved” under the pressure of the #MeToo movement against sexual abuse and harassment.
Weinstein was taken to New York’s Rikers Island jail following the sentencing. Hours later, he was transported to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan for “ongoing heart problems and chest pains,” Juda Engelmayer, a spokesman for Weinstein, said in an email. Weinstein underwent surgery at Bellevue to clear a heart blockage last week.
Engelmayer said “we are hopeful he will be held overnight for observation given his recent heart procedure less than a week ago and his ongoing medical issues.”
A jury on Feb. 24 found Weinstein – once one of Hollywood’s most influential men – guilty of sexually assaulting former production assistant Mimi Haleyi and raping former aspiring actress Jessica Mann. The length of the sentence means Weinstein may spend the rest of his life incarcerated, considering he is 67 and has health issues. Defense lawyers had recommended the minimum possible five years in prison.
Weinstein, Haleyi and Mann all addressed the court during the sentencing hearing. The two women spoke of the trauma they have endured since Weinstein attacked them, with Haleyi saying, “It scarred me deeply, mentally and emotionally, perhaps irreparably, perhaps forever.”
Mann added, “I am forced to carry that experience until I die.”
Addressing the court from a wheelchair behind the defense table, Weinstein said, “I’m totally confused.”
Prosecutors portrayed Weinstein as a serial predator who had manipulated women with promises of career advancement in Hollywood, coaxing them to hotel rooms or private apartments and then overpowering and violently attacking them.
“The young struggling dreamers were not even people to him. He could take what he wanted knowing there was very little anyone could do about it,” Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi told the court.
Weinstein said he was worried about the “thousands of men who are losing due process” during the #MeToo movement just as people in the past had their careers destroyed when they were accused of being communists.
“I feel remorse for all of the men who are going through this fight,” Weinstein said, sounding unrepentant.
More than 100 women, including famous actresses, have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct stretching back decades, fueling the #MeToo movement. Weinstein has denied the allegations and said that any sex was consensual.
Haleyi said Weinstein has seemed “completely disconnected from the gravity of the crime he has committed against me.”
“I showed up not as a perfect victim, but as a human being,” she said.
Weinstein had faced a maximum of 29 years in prison.
“Although this is a first conviction, it is not a first offense,” the judge told the court.
Weinstein said he had worked too hard and put too much pressure on himself. “I’m really trying to be a better person,” he said.
Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance told reporters the judge had “sent a message” to potential offenders.
Weinstein faces separate sexual assault charges in Los Angeles, where the local district attorney said on Thursday he had started extradition proceedings.
<h5>APPEAL PROMISED</h5>
Engelmayer, said the defense expects to file an appeal in July.
Defense lawyer Rotunno said there are murderers who will go free sooner than Weinstein will. “I am overcome with anger at that number,” Rotunno said of the 23-year sentence.
Mann testified during the trial that Weinstein raped her in a Manhattan hotel room in 2013. Mann called Weinstein a Jekyll and Hyde character, charming in public but prone to rage when they were alone.
“I want to remind you I told Harvey, ‘no,’” she told the court. Her voice was strong but the paper she read from shook in her hands.
“He’s baffled at finally being held accountable,” Mann said of Weinstein.
“Justice has been served today, due in no small part to the courage of the women who testified against Harvey Weinstein,” U.N. human rights chief Michelle Bachelet wrote on Twitter. “To mark real change, others who commit such appalling crimes must be held accountable, no matter where & what position they occupy.”
Burke sentenced Weinstein to 20 years for the attack on Haleyi and three years for the rape of Mann. The jury acquitted Weinstein on the most serious charges, a single count of first-degree rape as well as two counts of predatory sexual assault, which carried a potential life sentence.
Weinstein won an Academy Award for producing Shakespeare in Love and was responsible for other acclaimed films including Pulp Fiction, The English Patient and Gangs of New York.

LOS ANGELES: Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks and his wife, actress Rita Wilson, have both tested positive for coronavirus in Australia, the actor said on Twitter.
Hanks said that he and Wilson, who are both 63, were tested in Australia, where he is working on a film, after they felt tired and achy with slight fevers.
“To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the coronavirus and were found to be positive,” Hanks said in the tweet.
The film star said that he and Wilson would be “tested, observed and isolated” for as long as required.
The couple are the first major U.S. celebrities known to have contracted COVID-19. The coronavirus has infected more than 1,000 people in the United States.
“Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach, no? We’ll keep the world posted and updated,” Hanks tweeted.
Hanks had traveled to Australia to begin filming an upcoming movie about Elvis Presley. He is set to play Presley’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker, in the Warner Bros. production.
“We have been made aware that a company member from our Elvis feature film, which is currently in pre-production in The Gold Coast, Australia, has tested positive for COVID-19,” Warner Bros said in a statement, without naming the person.
“We are working closely with the appropriate Australian health agencies to identify and contact anyone who may have come in direct contact with the individual.
“The health and safety of our company members is always our top priority, and we are taking precautions to protect everyone who works on our productions around the world,” the studio said.
The Warner Bros statement did not mention Hanks.
It was not immediately clear if filming on the project would be postponed due to the actor’s illness.
Hanks won best actor Academy Awards for his role in 1994’s Philadelphia, in which he plays a man stricken with AIDS, and Forrest Gump the following year. Wilson has appeared in such films as Sleepless in Seattle”and Runaway Bride.
The coronavirus has infected more than 121,000 people in 118 countries while over 4,300 people have died due to the virus, according to a Reuters tally. In the United States at least 37 people have died from the respiratory illness.

Britain’s Prince Andrew has “completely shut the door” on cooperating with the FBI in its investigation into late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, a US prosecutor said Monday.
Despite publicly offering his assistance, “Prince Andrew has now completely shut the door on voluntary cooperation,” said New York attorney Geoffrey Berman, who had already accused the prince in late January of failing to cooperate.
Berman added that his office, which is known for having some of the most aggressive investigators in the US federal judiciary system, “is considering its options” on how to proceed, without offering further details.
Queen Elizabeth II’s second son stepped back from frontline royal duties after he faced outrage over an interview with the BBC late last year in which he defended his friendship with Epstein.
Andrew, 59, also denied having sexual relations with Virginia Giuffre, who alleges she was trafficked to have sex with friends of Epstein when she was 17.
Epstein, 66, killed himself in a New York jail in August while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges.
He was a multi-millionaire hedge fund manager who befriended countless celebrities over the years, including US President Donald Trump.
Epstein was charged with one count of sex trafficking of minors and another of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of minors.
He denied the charges but was facing up to 45 years in jail if found guilty.

SEOUL: Japan’s travel restrictions on South Koreans over the coronavirus epidemic have spurred cancellations of a string of K-pop concerts scheduled in Japan, threatening to hurt the Korean entertainment industry in its most lucrative market.
Japan said starting Monday, people arriving from South Korea will be quarantined for two weeks. Tokyo also suspended visa waivers and the validity of existing visas for Koreans, followed by a similar move by South Korea, rekindling a diplomatic feud between the neighbors.
South Korean boy band Super Junior called off its tours scheduled to take place on March 25 and 26 in Japan, citing the Japanese government’s measures to “curb immigration.”
South Korea’s entertainment firm CJ ENM followed suit, postponing its annual K-pop festival KCON in Japan. KCON in Japan last year drew more than 88,000 fans, according to CJ ENM.
Japan’s travel restrictions are a fresh blow to the entertainment industry in the wake of a fast-spreading virus. K-pop events have also been canceled or postponed elsewhere in the world because of the epidemic.
Singer Taeyeon has canceled her Feb. 1 concert in Singapore, saying that she is worried about the health of fans.
A Korean music festival in Los Angeles, originally planned for April 25, was postponed due to “travel restrictions in Asia.”
At home, boy band BTS canceled its scheduled April concert in Seoul, amid growing concerns of the new coronavirus outbreak, its music label, Big Hit Entertainment previously said.
Japan alone accounted for more than 60% of South Korea’s music exports, marking $320.6 million worth of exports in 2017 followed by China and Southeast Asian countries, according to Statistics Korea.
“Entertainment firms and talent agencies will now gird for almost zero concert profits,” said Lee Ki-hun, an analyst at Hana Financial and Investment. “Not only ticket sales but also advertisement revenues are gone for the time being,” he said.
South Korea has suffered 51 deaths and 7,382 infections in the biggest coronavirus outbreak outside China, where the disease emerged late last year.

PARIS: Madonna has canceled shows in Paris on Tuesday and Wednesday due to restrictions imposed over the coronavirus outbreak, promoter Live Nation said on Monday.
France on Sunday banned gathering of more than 1,000 people as the death toll and number of coronavirus infections continued to rise.
Earlier, in January, the pop legend had canceled a show in Portugal’s capital Lisbon, the city that inspired her newest album Madame X, as she struggled to cope with pain from “ongoing injuries.”
Promoter Everything Is New issued a statement on Facebook apologizing to fans and thanking them for the “well-wishes for Madonna’s recovery”.
“We sincerely regret the disappointment to fans due to the unforeseen and last-minute changes to the schedule,” it said.
The 61-year-old star kicked off her European tour in Lisbon on Jan. 12, where she has lived since mid-2017.

NEW YORK: Former movie producer Harvey Weinstein, who was convicted of rape and sexual assault last week, was transferred to New York’s Rikers Island jail complex from Bellevue Hospital on Thursday after undergoing a procedure to clear a heart blockage.

Weinstein arrived in Rikers’ North Infirmary Command section, which houses inmates requiring medical care, by midafternoon, according to jail records. The move came after Weinstein underwent the procedure on Wednesday, according to his spokesman, Juda Engelmayer.
The former producer had been taken to Bellevue following his conviction on Feb. 24, after his bail was revoked and he was taken into custody.
The Rikers Island jail complex, whose main building went up in 1932, has long been plagued by violence and neglect. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio vowed in 2017 to close it within a decade.
A Bellevue spokeswoman declined to comment on Weinstein.
Weinstein, 67, was found guilty of sexually assaulting former production assistant Mimi Haleyi in 2006 and raping former aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013. He faces up to 29 years in prison when he is sentenced on March 11.
Jurors acquitted Weinstein on the two most serious charges, predatory sexual assault, which carried a maximum life sentence.
The verdict was seen as a milestone for the #MeToo movement, which was fueled by his case starting in late 2017. The movement inspired women to accuse hundreds of powerful men – in entertainment, business, news media, politics and other fields – of sexual misconduct.
More than 80 women have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct. He has denied the accusations, and said any sexual encounters were consensual.
The former producer was a key force behind acclaimed films such as The English Patient and Shakespeare in Love, which both won Oscars for best picture. His former film studio, the Weinstein Co, filed for bankruptcy in March 2018 and is being liquidated.
In addition to his convictions in New York, Weinstein also faces several felony charges in Los Angeles in connection with alleged sexual assaults against two women in 2013.
